Dear all,

On Sunday, May 18, the Lake Merritt Joggers and Striders running club will host another running of the Tilden Tough Ten (TTT). This is a footrace that starts at Inspiration Point in Tilden Park, proceeds along the Nimitz path on paved, rolling, hills, then downhill and back uphill on a trail and back to Inspiration Point. It’s a killer and one of the East Bay’s most popular race courses.

For the last five years, Berkeley Ironworks has contributed a team of volunteer cyclists known as the “BIW Bike Brigade.” Water is scare along the course, and in recent years, unusually hot temperatures have posed serious health risks to the runners. Our cyclists, armed with messenger bags loaded with tiny water bottles, deploy to various points along the paved path on their bikes, where they extend water bottles to runners passing by. Every year, in the post race survey, the Bike Brigade is named the single most helpful support activity of the race.

Interested? Your help is needed from approximately 7:00 a.m. until 12 noon. You will have a captain to replenish your water supplies, receive a volunteer T-shirt and complimentary small breakfast. Most of all, you’ll earn the gratitude of the runners. What distinguishes the TTT is how the runners compete for times that entitle them to special T-shirts. Those shirts are wearable bragging rights! Not having to stop for small cups of water has made the difference for many runners who can snatch and drink a bottle on the go thanks to our volunteer crew.
